A birth plan is a way to communicate your preferences for your labor, birth, and immediate postpartum. Birth plans outline the various options you want to be offered/given, making it easy for your birth team to scan the document and act accordingly. This avoids you having to make in-the-moment big decisions or you being bombarded with questions during your birth.

Creating a birth plan gives you a sense of control and understanding of how you envision your birth going. Women who use birth plans generally go into labor feeling more confident and relaxed than those without one. It also helps your birth team to understand what is important to you and what you want your birth experience to be like. Birth plans outline how you want your labor and delivery to go, but they are not a guarantee of that outcome. In cases of emergency, alternative decisions may need to be made in order to protect the safety of you and/or your baby.
